Electoral Roll
The electoral roll contains the names and addresses
of everyone who is registered to vote.
Using historic records of electoral rolls can help you to find living relatives with whom
you have lost touch or may not even have met.
By tracing living relatives through the electoral roll, you will have access to a much wider base of
information because they will be able to tell you about their particular lineage and may help you to find more pieces of the jigsaw.
As well as an address search of the electoral roll, you can also carry out a person search or business search.
These will give you information from published telephone directories and, with the latter, names of company directors. With these details to hand, you can start calling living relatives to see what they can tell you about your family.
However, since 2002, people have had the choice to opt out of the published version of the electoral roll so there's a chance that someone you may expect to find on record is not listed.
Also, as the most recently published electoral roll may contain information obtained over a year previously, there is a chance that the information may not be completely up to date.

The more address details you can provide when searching the electoral roll the better because the more specific the results will be.
If you only know the town and county, though, that can still provide you with a list of possible matches for your search but you may have to dig deeper to find what you are looking for.
